WoW: Leadership Strife

Dayereth is a Guild Officer in an Alliance Guild on the Oceanic Realm of Saurfang. He has been playing WoW since 2006 and has seen his fair share of guilds as both a member and an officer. He has been with his current guild for over 2 years now and enjoys spending time with the people in it.

Hey guys, welcome to The Crazy Rant. This’ll be the first post in my World of Warcraft series of rants, which will cover just about anything and everything from WoW from my perspective as an officer in a guild.

So, when you have a problem with someone else who’s harassing you, you ask them nicely to stop right? And then you tell them to if they don’t? And then if they still don’t you /ignore them or you tell you Guild Master. Well…. what does an officer do when it’s the GM harassing them? Do you go to another officer? Do you rage quit? What would you do?

Anyway, the backstory to this is that I was on my DK, powerlevelling my JC after managing to finally get my mining to a decent level for Outland, and there’s a conversation going on in /g. So I go to type in /o about find out I don’t have the rights to do that. Ok, awesome, never played this guy much so never got him promoted to Officer status. So I pst my GM and ask her: “Would I be able to have this guy bumped up to AGL so I can see /o whilst I level?” and she replies with “Sure, but you have no time to level. You need to run heroics and get gear.” WTF?

I’m a good WoW player, at least I think I am and have been told I am. I also have more than decent gear on my SPriest main, and am by far a better raider that my GM (not hard to be really when all she does is spam healbot and is unable to move or look around). She also relies utterly on pre-learned strategies, for once I would love to go in against a boss and learn the fight as we do it, having read nothing about it – but that’s a rant for another time. And after the above, she has the balls(? lol) to tell me what characters I can play and can’t play? Sure she’s my GM, but I pay for this game!

So I tell her so, and ask her not to tell me how to play again ~ it’s not exactly like she was suggesting a new spell rotation to me (and she’s a pally anyway), she was telling me what characters I am allowed and have time to play. I’d say it’s my choice, right?

Ok so she drops it. The next day I’m toying with multiboxing, and I ask “How did you get used to multiboxing” in /g, because I was finding it rather annoying switching between computers (and Synergy didn’t want to work for whatever reason after the first 30 minutes). And she replies: “Hm, 1. I make sure my [main's name] has the best gear she could possibly have” and then “2. I don’t move to 2 before I’m certain 1 is done” – neither relate to the question I posed. But there she was again, telling me how to play. I quickly pst her and this time tell her to stop. I then spent the rest of the night asking her at regular intervals if she understood (whilst doing other things of course). I got no reply.

And today, when I asked her in vent, all she had to say was “I have nothing to say – you’ve been rude”. Wow, I ask then I tell her to stop telling me how to play – which I put into the category of harassment – and I’m the rude one. Fun!

Now, this usually would be a “bugger off” sort of thing, despite her being my GM, but she’s done similar things to another fellow officer who opted not to raid, instead she did some light gaming and went to play with her little kids in real life; the raid didn’t need her dps, and she was doing something she enjoyed more, not to mention that our GM was getting on most of our nerves and many officers were taking extended breaks from the game – it just wasn’t fun to login anymore simply to be treated like a noob when you’re most definitely the opposite in relation to her – all because it took her a year to get a whole bunch of achievements and gear when the majority of us did it all during the Naxx era and decided to take breaks (just like those other extended breaks) and now she has more of them than we do *shrug*. She’s also done this to guild members who have left over it.

And to be honest, I’m thinking of leaving too. After my 2 years of service to this guild, and well over 600 man hours working our guild website, constantly improving it and adding new features to it – more so than I do for commissioned jobs – I think that I don’t deserve this crap.

Honestly, why should I cop crap from a bad raider with good gear over me choosing to play an alt and have some fun instead of continue the old boring instance badge farming on my main who has good gear when I also raid and play very well, in a game which I pay to play? I shouldn’t is the answer.

That still begs the question, when some officers are being harassed by a guild master, who do they turn to? Other officers who likely won’t believe it? The GM who won’t listen? Should we /gquit?

That’s my rant for this time. Stay tuned for my next rant… and possibly news of my resolution to this mess.
